The KC Smokey promise

Small businesses and nonprofits deserve better than a template and a ticket number.

KC roots, anywhere reach.

The studio's roots are in Kansas City. Your project can be anywhere: we work 100% virtually over video calls, email, and shared previews.

A real person.

You work directly with Ross, from the first chat to launch day. No handoffs, no call centers, no getting bounced around.

Fast, not rushed.

Quick turnarounds and clear timelines — without cutting the corners that actually matter.

How it works

Low and slow where it counts. Quick everywhere else.

  1. Pull up a chair

Over a video call or email, tell us about your business or cause, who you serve, and what your site needs to do. No jargon, no pressure.

  2. Plan the menu

Pages, content, and look & feel. You'll see a clear plan before anything gets built.

  3. Fire up the build

Design and development with regular check-ins, so there are zero surprises at the finish line.

  4. Serve it up

We launch, show you how to make updates, and stick around with an optional care plan.

The person behind the smoke

Hi, I'm Ross.

I started KC Smokey Studio to give small businesses and nonprofits websites that are as bold and welcoming as they are. The studio has Kansas City roots, but I work with clients anywhere, 100% virtually. When you work with the studio, you work with me — start to finish.

I build websites for organizations that live in public. Based in the Kansas City metro, I'm the maker behind KC Smokey Studio and the new site for the William Baker Choral Foundation, a national choral organization with ensembles in Kansas City, Atlanta, Chicago, and Iowa.

I've been on the Foundation's Board of Trustees since 2012 and with the William Baker Festival Singers since 2011. Before this rebuild I led the Foundation's earlier website overhaul, its move onto iTunes, and a cleanup of e-commerce and online marketing. The studio work comes out of that same job: concerts, education, ticketing, and a library that has to be findable, not just pretty.
